Helping you address what’s underneath.

Hi! I’m Ania Scanlan, LMFT.

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
EMDRIA Certified EMDR Therapist

EMDR and Relationship Therapy in Shoreview, Minnesota

My Approach to Therapy
and Our Work Together

Conventional talk therapy wisdom focuses on the symptoms – remove the symptom, and viola! you’re better now.

However, removing the symptom only addresses the surface.

Few weeks go by and you develop another symptom. Why?

Because what lies under the surface (sometimes, deep under the surface) wasn’t addressed. And it needs to be addressed for lasting relief and change.

Our work together is driven by you and your goals. After all, you are the expert in your life! (Even though it may not feel like that at times.)

You may just need a gentle push to look underneath. So you address not only the symtpom, but the roots of  what’s been negatively affecting your life.

The vision and desires you have for your life and your relationships direct our time together. And if you feel confused about what that vision actually is – that’s what therapy is for – healing, discovering, changing.

I incorporate parts work, mindfulness, hypnosis, and EMDR Therapy to help address the origin of the challenges that are bringing you to relationship therapy — so you can experience genuine, long-lasting relief.

Empathy. Compassion. Understanding.

You deserve these in every relationship you have –
including the one you have with your therapist.

Therapy is an incredibly personal, often vulnerable journey — one you don’t want to embark on with just anyone. You want someone who has the expertise to help you, and who also creates a non-judgemental, calm environment where you can feel comfortable processing some of the most raw parts of your life. And that’s what you get with me as your therapist.

Clients come to me looking for a compassionate, no-nonsense EMDR and relationship therapist: someone who sees the good in you and your relationships, who offers a safe place to process your thoughts and feelings, and who will challenge you to look at things through different lenses.

My place in our therapy relationship is to help you tap into and develop the power that lies within you, so you can create the life and the relationships you want.

Last Few Details

I received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Colgate University in New York,  a Juris Doctor from William Mitchell College of Law, and finally a Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy from St. Mary’s University Minnesota.

Prior to opening Empower You Therapy in 2018, I worked in the field of regulatory compliance, estates and trusts law, and while in graduate school in outpatient and in-home settings providing individual and relationship therapy.

Polish is my native language. When not doing therapy, I enjoy my time with my family, our fluffy cat, and an (almost) equally fluffy dog. I read a lot, bake (especially in Winter), enjoy good Indian food and Polish bigos.

I’m a member of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) and the Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing International Association (EMDRIA).
